by Michelle Michaels
On Monday, January 10, 2011, the Membership and Career Development & Life Balance Committees of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, chaired by Michelle Michaels and Stacy Horth-Neubert, will present “Maintaining Health, Happiness and Sanity in the Legal Profession”. This program will take place downtown at the law Firm of Crowell & Moring at 515 South Flower Street, 40th Floor Los Angeles, CA 90071, and will provide one hour of MCLE credit for the Detection/Prevention of Substance Abuse or Mental Illness. This program, specially presented prior to the State Bar’s January 31st compliance deadline, is perfect for acquiring your last minute continuing education credits, or for getting a jump start on next year’s credits.
The event speaker, Richard P. Carlton, is in charge of Education, Research and Program Development for the Lawyer Assistance Program of the State Bar of California. He also manages a free, short-term personal counseling service for the members of the California Bar. Additionally, he is a consultant to the US Courts for the Ninth Circuit, the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, and to the Idaho Judicial Branch on matters of judicial stress and wellness. Mr. Carlton regularly delivers continuing legal education presentations to local bar associations, specialty bars, State Bar sections, and law firms throughout California on addressing substance abuse and managing stress. His articles have appeared in Judicature, The Judges Journal of the ABA, California Bar Journal, and other legal publications. He has been addressing mental health and disability concerns in the legal profession for twenty-four years. Mr. Carlton holds a Masters Degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley, where his studies focused on treatment interventions and behavioral science research.
Mr. Carlton has an engaging and exciting program planned for attendees of this MCLE accredited program. His discussion will focus on an examination of the stress, depression, substance abuse and other personal challenges commonly faced by today’s legal professionals. This program will be stimulating and certain to deliver both your compulsory State Bar credits, as well as sure-fire strategies for “Maintaining Health, Happiness and Sanity in the Legal Profession”.
