WLALA's Annual Holiday Dinner for Homeless Women was a Huge Success!
by Sandy Klein
WLALA held its annual DWC holiday reception at the Downtown Women’s Center (DWC) on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. The DWC is a nonprofit organization that provides supportive services to over 1,600 homeless women annually in the Los Angeles Skid Row area. Since 1978, the Downtown Women’s Center has remained the only organization in the Skid Row area exclusively serving the needs of homeless women, in particular the mentally ill. Each year the women of the center look forward to the holiday reception, and this year’s event was outstanding. Many WLALA members and their families served the meals and participated in the festivities, which included WLALA providing small gifts to each of the attendees and Judge Diana Wheatley leading the holiday songs.
The dinner was a resounding success thanks to all of the WLALA members who so generously donated their time, money, scrumptious desserts and other items needed to make this year’s event so special. Thank you also to George’s Greek Café for providing such a delicious, healthy dinner and such a significant discount to WLALA for the meal. Also, a special thanks to Trader Vic’s at LA Live for being a generous donor to the DWC.
The next WLALA/DWC event will be our annual Spring Brunch, which will be held at the DWC’s new facility located at 442 S. San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013. As soon as the date of the Spring Brunch is finalized, a notice will be circulated to all WLALA members. If you were not able to volunteer at the WLALA/DWC dinner, please consider volunteering for the Brunch. Also, please remember that the DWC has many other volunteer opportunities and seeks donations for its new facility. For more information about the DWC, please CLICK HERE.
