Splitting the Team
by Maria Rivas Hamar
The Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Family Law Section and the Domestic Violence Committee are heading a seminar on April 28, 2011, called Splitting the Team: Current Issues in Family Law, Lessons from the McCourt Case Plus the Impact of Domestic Violence in Family Law.
The McCourt dissolution of marriage case (as in the owners of the LA Dodgers), which involved a highly contested post nuptial agreement, brought up a cornucopia of issues related to family law as well as contractual law and ethical considerations. The parties in McCourt had family law as well as civil litigators on their respective teams. The seminar will include an attorney from the McCourt case, Michael Kump, and a family law specialist providing important information on post nuptial agreements and related issues.
The second part of the seminar will apply to the impact that domestic violence allegations as well as restraining orders can have on a family law case (custody, support, visitation, etc. ). Family law attorneys, as well as volunteers in legal clinics, often deal with questions related to the consequences of domestic violence allegations or restraining orders for each party in a family law case. During this seminar a Judge Frederick Shaller and Ana M. Storey will provide information about this area of the law, as well as practical considerations.
The seminar will provide 2 hours of general MCLE credit. It will be held at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, 2029 Century Park East, Ste. 2600, Los Angeles, CA 90067. April 28, 2011, 6 p.m. light dinner hosted by Crowell & Moring and program from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
