WLALApalooza 2011 Annual Fundraising Festivity
by Palanda Brownlow
It’s that time of year when children run free, the sun shines well into the evening hours, and the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles (WLALA) gears up for its annual silent auction fundraiser - “WLALApalooza.” This year’s event will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2011, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event will take place at the historic Gilmore Adobe, one of California’s oldest adobes, adjacent to the Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax in Los Angeles.
While serenaded by the exquisite sounds of live music, WLALApalooza guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres, handmade tortillas, and signature margaritas from Casablanca Mexican Restaurant and delectable desserts from Tortuga Bay. Guests can also participate in a tour of the historic adobe, enjoy a free neck and shoulder massage, and relax on the patio by the crackling fire of an outdoor fireplace.
WLALA expects the event to attract 200-300 guests from the Los Angeles legal and business communities. WLALApalooza not only offers a great networking opportunity, but a chance to connect with other civically-minded individuals bonded by a wonderful cause.
As in prior years, WLALApalooza will feature a silent auction. Items up for bid include autographed books and sports memorabilia, gym memberships, gift certificates to hot dining spots throughout Los Angeles, tickets to a variety of sports and cultural events, specialty gift baskets filled with unique goodies, and much, much more. There will also be an Opportunity Drawing where guests will have the chance to win a number of fabulous prizes. Proceeds from the Opportunity Drawing fund the WLALA Foundation.
“WLALAPalooza is the perfect opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues, enjoy great food, wonderful music, and shop - all for a great cause. It’s a truly wonderful event that you won’t want to miss,” states WLALA President Angela S. Haskins.
Proceeds from the event will be used to support WLALA’s ongoing operations in furtherance of the organization’s mission, which is to promote the full participation of women lawyers and judges in the legal profession, to maintain the integrity of our legal system by advocating principles of fairness and equality, to improve the status of women in our society including their exercise of equal rights and reproductive choice, and to actively work towards the furtherance of these goals through WLALA’s committees, sections and activities.
Some proceeds will also be used to support projects of the WLALA Foundation, including: (1) the Domestic Violence Project, in which volunteer lawyers provide legal services at the Sojourn legal clinic for battered women; (2) the WLALA Foundation’s scholarships and public action grants, both of which provide financial assistance to law students; (3) the Harriet Buhai Family Law Center, which assists low income individuals with family law matters; and (4) the Downtown Women’s Center, which provides support and meals to homeless women residing at the shelter.
WLALA is actively seeking sponsors interested in contributing to this worthwhile event.
