Janet Rubin Fields
Career Highlights: Civil litigator and trial attorney, representing both plaintiffs and defendants
Specialty: Catastrophic injury, real estate, business litigation, professional liability
Fields recently mediated a challenging multimillion-dollar wrongful death case stemming from a driving-under-theinfluence wreck. The case touched on multiple aspects of the law, because the defendant, anticipating a lawsuit, had conveyed his real estate interests in a vineyard and ranch to two churches before litigation was filed. Fields convinced the churches and the defendant, who was being sued well in excess of his insurance policy limits, to cooperate with returning the property to the defendant so he could in turn transfer the property to the family of the decedent as part of the settlement. Fields convinced the grieving family — angry over the fraud they thought the defendant had committed — to pay the costs accrued to the churches for maintaining the properties. The decedent was a husband of more than 50 years, a father and grandfather. “It took at a lot ingenuity and brainstorming among the attorneys to make it all work,” Fields said.
