Food From The Bar -- Get on Board: April 30 - May 25, 2012
by Kathleen McDowell
2012 marks the fourth year in Los Angeles of Food from the Bar -- a grass-roots campaign to alleviate hunger among children in our community. For four weeks (April 30 to May 25, 2012), law firms and legal offices engage in friendly competition in which participants contribute money, donate food, and volunteer time sorting and packing food at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. WLALA was one of the founders of Food from the Bar in Los Angeles, and continues to champion the campaign here and elsewhere.
Year Four of Food from the Bar brings some exciting developments and special opportunities for WLALA members. Most notably, the Foodbank has arranged for a special, exclusive “WLALA Family Volunteer Day” on May 19 so that WLALA members, families, and friends can bring children under the age of 14 to participate in a special volunteering event at the Foodbank. (Ordinarily, the Foodbank requires all volunteers to be a minimum of 14 years old.) Space is limited to a total of 30 volunteers, so if you would like to participate in this family event, please call the WLALA office promptly to reserve your spots before the event fills up.
Other big news for 2012 includes the participation this year of the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators (GLA ALA), the law schools at USC, UCLA, and Southwestern, and the California Attorney General’s Office. It is very simple to register your law firm or office (no matter how big or small) to be part of Food from the Bar. Simply go to the Foodbank’s website (www.lafoodbank.org), and download and return the one-page registration form. You will then be on the e-mail list and receive regular updates and details directly from the Foodbank.
You can also participate through WLALA, which will host food collection bins and a webpage through which you can make online contributions directly with a credit card. You can form or join a WLALA volunteer group. You can also volunteer on your own timeframe at your convenience. Call or email the WLALA office or the Foodbank to sign up for a volunteer shift. There will also be campaign kickoff events on the Westside (evening reception on April 12) and downtown (backpack-packing event on April 26) to get the campaign off to a rousing start.
The Food from the Bar campaign helps replenish food bank supplies to meet families’ increased need for food during the summer, when children are out of school and not receiving subsidized lunches and breakfasts. The goals for the 2012 campaign are to raise $375,000 (which amounts to over 1.4 million meals), 15,000 pounds of food, and 750 volunteer shifts.
