Career Development for the In-House Attorney: Lessons from the Top

by Stacy Bratcher

“How do I become part of the leadership cabinet?” “How do I show my company’s CFO that the legal department isn’t just another cost center?”  “Is it possible to transition from the GC’s office into an executive job?”  These questions and many more will be answered by an esteemed panel of L.A.-based general counsel who know what it takes to succeed in-house. The event, which is co-sponsored by the LACBA Corporate Law Section, will feature panelists from a variety of industries, such as entertainment and publishing, who will share their experiences from their company’s top legal position.

The event will kick-off with a happy hour allowing attendees a rare opportunity to network with other women in in-house positions.  Then, the panelists will share their tips for surviving and thriving as an in-house attorney and answer burning questions from the audience.  A representative of Robert Half Legal will also advise on making lateral moves or advancing into the top legal role at another company and will also share insights on in-house compensation.

Panelist will include these prominent in-house attorneys:

Christine Lawton, Senior Vice President for Business and Legal Affairs, NBC/Universal.

Julie Xanders, Assistant General Counsel/West Coast Media of Tribune Company and Senior Vice President, Legal for the Los Angeles Times.

SunMi Kim, Manager of Robert Half Legal, Los Angeles.

Judy Bain, Vice President of Legal Affairs and General Counsel of Epson America, Inc.

The panel will be moderated by Lisa Harrington, co-chair of WLALA’s In-House Counsel Committee and Vice President and Associate General Counsel, NBC/Universal, Digital Division.

Whether you just landed your first in-house job or have been practicing in-house for years, you are sure to learn something from this distinguished panel.  Please join us for this free event on May 16, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m.  Location information will be announced soon.

*** In order to ensure a focused discussion, attendance is limited to attorneys who currently hold in-house positions.
