Food from the Bar Volunteering: A WLALA Family Affair
Saturday, May 19, was WLALA Family Volunteer Day at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank as part of the Food from the Bar campaign, which ran from April 30 to May 25. Seven children and nine adults representing WLALA spent a Saturday morning at the Foodbank, learning about hunger in our community and the Foodbank’s operations, and getting their hands dirty (literally) in helping to sort and process food donations. Many thanks to Kim Arnal, Nicole Bershon, Julie Paluch and Heather Zakson -- and the children they brought with them -- as well as Lindsay Audette and her “posse” for being a part of WLALA Family Volunteer Day. The kids had a blast, and the experience provided many teachable moments for their parents.
Volunteering is just one component of Food from the Bar activities. During the month-long campaign, WLALA, along with over 70 law firms and legal offices, collected food donations and monetary contributions to support the Foodbank. With the help of a kid-created coin collection box, over $400 in donations was raised from WLALA board members at the May monthly meeting alone. Another $1375 was collected through WLALA’s “virtual food drive” -- WLALA’s customized page on the Foodbank’s website for online donation. WLALA as an organization gave over $2000 as part of a pledge made at the 2011 Installation and Awards Dinner in honor of Distinguished Service Award recipient and Food from the Bar proponent, Kathleen M. McDowell. Overall, WLALA raised over $4000 (!) this year, which will provide meals for 16,000 of our neighbors. Many thanks to all of you who contributed money and food.
There will be a closing reception and awards ceremony for the 2012 Food from the Bar campaign on June 20, at LACBA, from 5:30 to 7:30, at which the overall results will be announced and awards presented. No charge to attend. If you would like to attend, please contact the WLALA office.
