On June 8, 2012, WLALA proudly sponsored the first Federal Court Power Lunch in the nation. Approximately twenty-five Roosevelt High School students attended the Power Lunch, which was held in the Roybal Federal Building. A number of WLALA Board Members attended and participated in the lunch, including Circuit Judge Jacqueline Nguyen and Bankruptcy Judge Sandra Klein, who are the Judicial/Federal Court Liaisons, as well as LA Superior Court Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell, Commissioner Nicole Bershon and Shaun Dabby Jacobs.
Circuit Judge Nguyen kicked off the Lunch by introducing Chief District Court Judge Audrey Collins, Chief Bankruptcy Judge Peter Carroll and Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal who provided a warm welcome to the students. Many district court and bankruptcy judges attended the event as well as the district court and bankruptcy court Executive Officers/Clerks of the Court. A number of attorneys from diverse practice areas also attended and helped make the Power Lunch a huge success.
Judge Klein introduced each judge and lawyer and provided some fun facts about the judges. Guess which judge wanted to be the commissioner of the NFL and which judge taught aerobics (leg warmers and all) during the 1980s. (Please see below for the answers to these questions). Judge Klein then thanked the judges, the lawyers, and the Bankruptcy Court staff who participated in the Power Lunch and who were instrumental in making the Power Lunch such a great event.
During the Lunch, the judges, lawyers and students sat at tables named for the nine sitting U.S. Supreme Court Justices as well as some noteworthy former Supreme Court Justices. The lunchtime discussion included general legal topics and helped prepare the students for a game of “Legal Jeopardy” that was enjoyed by all. The Legal Jeopardy game, which is played like a traditional Jeopardy game, has categories including “Judges and Lawyers”, “Trials”, “Bill of Rights”, “Think Like a Lawyer”, and “Who’s Who in the Courtroom”. The students had a great time answering the questions and learning about the law and the legal profession.
At the end of the Power Lunch, Judge Klein thanked everyone for participating, and she gave a special thanks to Kay Burt, Lindsay Audette and WLALA.
The next Federal Court Power Lunch, which will be with the Los Angeles Police Cadets, is scheduled for October 5, 2012 at noon at the Roybal Federal Building, 255 E. Temple Street, Room 1268, Los Angeles, CA 90012. If you are interested in participating, please email the WLALA office. Space will be limited, so first come, first served.
SPOILER ALERT: Judge O’Connell wanted to be the commissioner of the NFL and Judge Klein taught aerobics in the 1980s.
Hon. Sandra Klein is the WLALA Judicial/Federal Court Liaison. Hon. Klein is a judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California.
