Leading the Way
2012 Awards & Installation Dinner

by Anne Tremblay

The historic Millennium Biltmore Hotel will once again be the site of the annual WLALA Awards and Installation Dinner to be held on Thursday, September 13, 2012.

WLALA’s Awards and Installation Dinner is designed to honor those who support our community and promote our mission. This year’s theme is Leading the Way. The following awardees who are Leading the Way in the Los Angeles legal community will be honored at the event:

The Ernestine Stahlhut Award will be presented to the Hon. Patricia L. Collins (Ret.), a highly regarded neutral with ADR Services, Inc. Judge Collins served 20 years on the bench, including sixteen years on the Los Angeles Superior Court, and she was Assistant Supervising Judge to the West District. Judge Collins began her career with the United States Attorney’s Office and in private practice where she primarily handled business and insurance matters.

Among other activities, Judge Collins is on the board of Team Prime Time, a non-profit that provides after school programs for at risk middle school students in Los Angeles County. She also created a program called Prime Time Trials in conjunction with Loyola Law School. While she was on the bench, Judge Collins created six different mock trial programs that were age appropriate for elementary and middle school students. On “Take Your Daughter to Work Day,” Judge Collins hosted a group of daughters from a local school and local law firm, and assisted the children in preparing a mock trial script to be presented in her courtroom.

Judge Collins is a positive role model, an inspiration and a mentor. She has provided advice and guidance to countless women on their applications to law school, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the bench.

The Myra Bradwell Award will be presented to Raytheon Company. Thirty-three percent of Raytheon’s business units have female General Counsels. In addition, Raytheon’s VP of Litigation, VP of Corporate Transactions and Governance, and Director of Business Ethics and Compliance are women. Of the 13 direct reports to the Corporate General Counsel, about 40 percent are women, and women comprise 52 percent of the professional population in the Office of General Counsel.

Benefits that make Raytheon a good place for women to work include flexible work assignments, adoption assistance, back-up child care, comprehensive life resources for expecting mothers, lactation rooms in most major locations, and an Employee Assistance Program. Raytheon’s Women’s Network (RWN) is the company’s largest employee resource group with more than 6,000 members. The group’s mission is to provide employees with career development opportunities by enhancing their leadership skills and increasing their exposure to company leadership.

Accepting the award on behalf of Raytheon is Barbara A. Pollack, Vice President and General Counsel, Space and Airborne Systems, Raytheon Company.

The Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Mary-Christine (M.C.) Sungaila, an appellate partner at Snell & Wilmer, who for over 15 years has performed public service through her pro bono work, community service and bar association activities.

Ms. Sungaila is an appointed member of the Steering Committee of the ABA Women Rainmakers, Marketing Co-Chair for the NAWL 2012 Mid-year Meeting in Los Angeles, and a Vice-Chair of The Appellate Practice Committee of the International Association of Defense Counsel. She was pro bono counsel of record for amici in, or consulted on, over 17 women’s and civil rights cases before the United States Supreme Court, the Inter-American Commission, the Inter-American Court on Human Rights, and the California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal.

Ms. Sungaila also has served on one or more community boards continuously since 1995, including on the RAND Institute for Civil Justice’s Board of Overseers, on the Board of Advisors of Claremont Graduate University’s School of Arts and Humanities, and on the Executive Committee of LACMA’s Modern and Contemporary Art Council.

In addition, we will install Ruth D. Kahn, Partner at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, as President and the woman who will lead the way for WLALA in 2012-2013.

Please join WLALA in honoring our awardees by attending this special event and please also consider a sponsorship or the purchase of an advertisement in our Tribute Book. For more information call the WLALA office at 213-892-8982 or email at info@wlala.org.
