DWC Fundraiser "Dinner with a Cause" a Smashing Success
On October 4, 2012, the Downtown Women’s Center hosted its annual gala fundraiser, “Dinner with a Cause,” at Union Station. This year’s gala honored Linda Griego and Bank of America for their support of DWC and celebrated the re-opening of Jill’s Place, the original DWC facility which has been completely renovated and re-named in honor of DWC founder Jill Halvorsen. Jill’s Place will feature 48 freshly renovated permanent supportive housing units in addition to the MADE by DWC vintage resale boutique, which will open in November and provide job training skills for the Ladies.
Dinner with a Cause was the most successful single fundraising event in DWC’s history, generating revenue far above expectations to help DWC provide critically needed services to homeless and very low income women. The evening drew 400 guests, including Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard; Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Councilman Jose Huizar; Councilwoman Jan Perry; Wendy Burch, Ana Garcia, and Dorothy Lucey of the Good News Foundation; and a number of WLALA members including Past Presidents Kathleen McDowell, Judith Seeds Miller, Angela S. Haskins, and Katherine M. Forster.
Pre-dinner festivities featured a silent auction, raffle, martini bar, wine, and hors d’oeuvres. Dinner was served family-style and included a video presentation, remarks by the Mayor and the honorees, and an exciting live auction.
Katherine M. Forster, a labor and employment lawyer at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP and Past President of WLALA (2008-2009), serves on the board as WLALA’s DWC Liaison.
