It’s Food from the Bar time again -- for the fifth year in a row. Since Food from the Bar was started in Los Angeles in 2009, it has grown each year at a wonderfully rewarding pace. WLALA has been an active supporter and participant since the very beginning. This year’s campaign runs from April 29 through May 25, 2013. Check out the youtube videos from last year http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJQ6_oweJrs and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WDz1lDAumg.
During the month-long Food from the Bar campaign, WLALA, along with over 70 law firms and legal offices, will raise funds, collect food donations, and volunteer at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. Food from the Bar is an effort by the entire legal community to alleviate childhood hunger in the Los Angeles community. Styled as a “friendly competition,” participants engage in creative and unique fundraising opportunities such as “casual for a cause” days (in which workers make a contribution in exchange for the right to dress casual), “formal Friday” (in which workers dressed in formal attire in response to a challenge), pancake eating contests, silent auctions, and one-day job swaps.
The campaign will kick off downtown on Thursday, April 25, from 10 to 11, with a fun backpack-packing competition. Staff, attorneys and assorted others from downtown law firms and legal offices will be on hand to have some fun and do some good, and start off the campaign by packing backpacks with non-perishable food for children from at-risk families to take home over the weekend. WLALA will have some representatives participating -- please email Fernanda Schmid (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you would like to join the WLALA team for the kickoff.
WLALA will also be organizing volunteer shifts on any of the Saturdays in May. If you’d like to try volunteering with the WLALA group at the Foodbank this year, please call the office to sign up. If every WLALA member brought in some food, gave some money (in any amount), or volunteered, WLALA could have a tremendous impact on some of the neediest in our community, and reaffirm its position as a leader in the Los Angeles legal community.
