Neubert Family Weeknight Favorite Pasta

This is an ideal recipe for a working parent: easy to make, healthy, made with ingredients I always have on hand and any fresh vegetables I happen to have in the house or garden.  Plus, it's a kid favorite, and makes enough for leftovers.
1 pound whole wheat or brown rice pasta (fusilli or penne)
1 large onion, chopped
1 red or yellow bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves minced garlic
1 bunch or bag of chard, chopped (or one bag baby spinach, or one bunch of chopped kale, stems removed and discarded)
1 can kidney or cannellini beans
1 package pre-cooked chicken sausage, cut into bite-sized pieces (optional), or 1 package crumbled cooked Italian chicken or turkey sausage
olive oil
grated parmesan-reggiano
Prepare pasta to al dente.
Meanwhile, sauté the onion, bell pepper and garlic in about 2 TBS olive oil, over medium heat.  When softened slightly, add chard or kale and continuing cooking until vegetables are softened.  Add beans and sausage, and heat through.  (If using spinach, add just after beans and sausage.)  Mix with pasta, and add salt, pepper and extra olive oil to taste.  Sprinkle with cheese.
Variations: omit sausage, add other seasonal veggies, omit parmesan/reggiano and add goat cheese, add chopped fresh herbs.
