President's Message - August
WLALA President 2015-2016
Over the past year, WLALA and its members have drawn attention to women’s issues through writing news articles, publically speaking, organizing events, mentoring other lawyers and law students and through volunteering. Over the last year, WLALA has held or sponsored over 60 programs, dinners and lunches. Just a few examples include two LACBA-WLALA Joint Task Force programs – the first on partner compensation and the second on strategies for addressing gender bias in communication. This year our Annual Litigator’s Forum focused on important lessons learned by high profile women trial attorneys and general counsel and featured notable experts in the field. We also held workshops on developing business relationships, managing stress and navigating your career path. Through our various programs, our members learn about and celebrated the practice of law and what it takes to fully participate and succeed as an attorney.
Our members also continued to give back to the community. This last year WLALA held 9 Power Lunch programs; our members volunteered at the Downtown Women’s Center and Sojourn Domestic Violence Clinic; and WLALA members again participated in the Food from the Bar Campaign by volunteering at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and raising money for the Food Bank.
WLALA’s work and relevance continues on. Just later this month, WLALA is co-sponsoring the Multicultural Bar Alliance of Southern California’s Annual Summer Networking Reception, featuring the Honorable Mariano-Florentino Cuellar; and a Roundtable Discussion on Racial Injustice including Police Misconduct.
I want to thank the many people who have made this year a success. First, thank you to Kay Burt, our executive administrator, and Lindsay Audette, our administrative assistant. Our administrative staff is essential to operations. Also, thank you to the tireless and dedicated Executive Committee and Board for 2015-2016, who planned the events and programs and helped guide this organization through its important decisions and strategic planning. And, thank you to all of the law firms and legal services companies and others who hosted our events, sponsored them, and supported the attorneys who work to serve our organization. A special thank you to the law firms of Sidley and Irell & Manella, which hosted our monthly Board meetings.
It has been an honor to serve as the leader of WLALA; and I plan to stay an active member in the years to come.
