President's Message - DECEMBER
WLALA President 2014-2015
It is the holiday season again – filled with parties, shopping, and giving our time and money to others. WLALA provides opportunities to do all of these things this month. On December 4, WLALA will hold its Annual Holiday Reception at the City Club downtown, where we will honor newly appointed and elected judges in the state and federal courts and our life members. California Court of Appeal Justice Audrey B. Collins will present the keynote remarks. Please join us in toasting our honorees and enjoying the city views as we kick off the holiday season.
We also have holiday shopping opportunities this month. On December 9, WLALA will sponsor a holiday shopping event at the Tory Burch boutique in Century City. Attendees will receive 10% off of regular-priced merchandise (with a few exceptions), and 10% of each purchase will be donated to WLALA. Please help us fund our events for 2015 by shopping for the holidays at Tory Burch on December 9. And, if you would like to combine your shopping and charitable giving, consider shopping at the Los Angeles Downtown Women Center’s boutique – Made by DWC (http://www.dwcweb.org/MADE/) . This social enterprise was created to empower the Downtown Women Center’s residents to discover their talents and develop skills, and proceeds are used to support the programs at the Center.
We also ask you to consider the WLALA Foundation annual giving campaign for your charitable giving this season. The WLALA Foundation was developed to facilitate the pro bono activities of WLALA. The Foundation’s annual giving campaign provides the funding for WLALA’s scholarships to local law students who demonstrate a commitment to WLALA’s mission, the Fran Kandel public interest grants given to law students engaged in public service over the summer, and our pro bono services including our Domestic Violence Project. Be sure to check out the article in this month’s newsletter by Foundation Board Member and Co-Chair of our Scholarships Committee, Sarah de Diego, who highlights a few of our prior scholarship recipients. We appreciate anything you can give – no contribution is too small. (To learn more about WLALA’s Annual Giving Campaign, go to https://wlala.site-ym.com/donations/donate.asp?id=12108).
Most importantly, this season is about more than parties, shopping and holiday giving. For those of you who celebrate religious holidays this month, let those days be fulfilling and special. And, for many of us, our most special time this season will be spent with family and friends – sharing, laughing and connecting. We wish you a joyous season with your loved ones!
