President's Message - JUNE

Anne C. Tremblay
WLALA President 2013-2014

"The summer night is like a perfection of thought." - Wallace Stevens

Summer for WLALA means one thing – our annual summer fundraiser, WLALApalooza.  On Tuesday, June 10TH , we are returning to the Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles.  A beautiful room, great food and drinks and the chance to catch up with friends await us.  Our silent auction is back along with new ways to support the WLALA Foundation and win some terrific prizes.  Our Financial Development committee members Vanessa Adriance, Perlette Jura, Sarah Schuh Quist and Ariella Simonds have worked tirelessly all year to make this the event of the summer.  It’s not too late to become a sponsor and there are plenty of tickets still available.

The June WLALA calendar also includes the opportunity to gain valuable insight from downtown family law judges, participate in a webinar on the topic of social media for lawyers, volunteer for the cooking club at the Downtown Women’s Center, join a mentoring circle, play golf or stop by a happy hour.  Please see the newsletter and our website for the details on these programs as well as WLALApalooza.

On Friday May 16TH, I was among many WLALA members who participated in the California Women Lawyers (CWL) annual conference, Strategies for Success.  Congratulations and thanks to CWL President Neda Mansoorian, CWL Executive Committee member Michelle Brauer Abidoye and WLALA CWL Liaison Susan Formaker for bringing us all together.  The panels and presentations were educational, inspiring and thought-provoking.  Among other things, I learned that the President of Black Women Lawyers, Tami L. Warren, was a flight attendant before becoming a deputy public defender and her ability to command a room may have resulted from that captive audience she managed aboard jetliners for so many years.  Attorney and lecturer Kimberly Papillion’s presentation on the neuroscience of decision-making was fascinating and a reminder that all of us have an obligation to increase fairness and work to eliminate our own unconscious associations or biases.  More on Kimberly Papillion’s work may be found at www.thebettermind.com. The event closed with a reception honoring the Hon. Victoria Kolakowski.  Judge Kolakowski, acknowledged for blazing the trail as the first transgendered trial judge in the United States, gave a witty and touching speech about her journey to the bench.  I especially enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many young women lawyers who are bound to be the rising stars of our profession.  Drinking wine under a sunny evening sky at the Doubletree Hotel’s rooftop garden made for the perfect end to a great conference.  It may have been May but it definitely felt like the start of summer.   Here’s to a successful summer for WLALA and many more wonderful summer nights to come!
