Social Media 201:

If you missed the 101 series, check out the archives. We covered the basics of each of the major social media networks and how they can be incorporated into a lawyer’s strategy for networking and connection with clients. In Social Media 201, we will cover more innovative uses, tips, and tricks. This article will cover, a curation tool for social media.

Newspaper 3.0 is a platform that allows you to flag posts from social media networks and the broader internet and then publish them as a “paper”. Any story that you find can be flagged with a “bookmarklet” (an extension for your browser that seamlessly allows you to add a website to for inclusion in your next paper. This allows you to distribute articles and stories of interest to you to a wider audience.

If you’re an employment attorney, for example, you might compile stories from around the ’net about recent articles and posts of interest—new laws, proposed legislation, recent prominent cases—for your paper. (In fact, here is the paper by a Florida attorney who does just that.)

The published paper is distributed to your audience on your social media platforms, making you a resource for your followers for pertinent news. In addition, “stories” that make it into your paper are flagged, telling newsmakers in your industry about your interest in their activity and increasing your name recognition among them.

Cross–Platform integrates with your social media networks, such as Twitter and Facebook to post notices to your followers when your paper gets published. These posts are easily shareable, so that your followers can share your paper with their followers. And, of course, when someone finds your paper, they can subscribe to it and get email notifications when your next paper is published.

While anyone can search for recent information about a particular topic, linking your followers to specific content establishes you as a trusted source for news and information on that subject. And because of its integrated social media component, you can easily credit people who created or linked to the content originally.

For someone who has mastered Social Media 101, is a great way of continuing social media integration into their practice.
