I. Event Logistics

The program, “Different Business Development Styles: Finding What Works For You,”  will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at One California Plaza Conference Center, 300 South Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90071. Appetizers and beverages, including wine, will be served at 6:00 p.m. The substantive program will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will last for approximately one and one half hours.

II. About the Program

In law school, you gained in-depth knowledge about the law, such as contracts, torts, and civil procedure. Once you graduated, you applied what you learned to produce quality work product and bill an excessive amount of hours for your firm. After working for a few years, however, you come to realize that it is just as important to generate business for yourself as it is to work hard and obtain positive results for your clients. Generating a book of business provides job security. Client relationships also can help you advance your career within the firm.

However, the question begs: When were you supposed to learn how to generate your own book of business? This program seeks to fill the gap, as it will provide you with the necessary tools not only to discover your own business development style, but also to apply it to foster your own business relationships and (ultimately) your book of business.

The program, “Different Business Development Styles: Finding What Works For You,” will feature four female partners from different legal backgrounds and practice areas who have successfully developed and maintained their own books of business at their respective law firms.

The panelists will cover a range of topics relating to different business development tools and styles that are critical for any lawyer in private practice. Each will discuss specific methods she uses for business development, and explain why certain methods work over others. The panelists also will track how their methods and tools may have changed over time and across different practice areas. The discussion will then focus on specific examples as to how each panelist has nurtured business relationships with individuals who are now her clients.  Because women in the legal profession face unique challenges for business development, the panel also will discuss how their styles and tools address those challenges.

This program is relevant to litigators and transactional lawyers alike from firms of all sizes. It also appeals to attorneys of all ages and experience, given that it is never too early to start building a professional network with potential clients.
