President's Message - MAY
Anne C. Tremblay
WLALA President 2013-2014
Great openings and
closings make all the difference in trial.
WLALA opened the month strong with our 19th Annual Litigators
Forum. A panel of top woman litigators
shared stories from their “Cases of a Lifetime”, while our keynote speaker, San
Francisco Chief Deputy City Attorney Therese Stewart, discussed both her case
of a lifetime (defending Mayor Gavin Newsom’s order authorizing same-sex
marriages) and also challenged us to think deeply about gender stereotypes. Thank you to our sponsors and kudos to
Litigation Committee Co-Chairs Robyn
Crowther and Tamar Terzian for a
great evening. We closed the month on
another high note with last week’s Women and Leadership Lunch. We were hosted by Shepard Mullin and treated
to insight and advice from four dynamic panelists – Zanne Devine, Rachel Jack,
Deborah Wong Yang, and Whitney Jones Roy. Thank you to WLALA Past President and Power
Lunch Co-Chair the Hon. Nicole Bershon,
for developing and moderating this program.
There is, of course,
more coming in May! Our Girl’s Night Out event will feature dinner and a play, The Tallest Tree in the Forest. Tickets are still available, so please join
us this Friday night, May 2nd.
On May 6th,
the LACBA/WLALA Joint Task Force on the Retention and Promotion of Women in the
Legal Profession will present Vivia Chen,
Chief Blogger for The Careerist. Ms.
Chen will present her “Rules for Success: Ten Things Women Shouldn’t Do.” Thank you to the Joint Task Force Steering
Committee, WLALA President-Elect Jennifer Romano, WLALA Harriet Buhai Liaison Susan
Alker, WLALA Second Vice President Stacy Horth-Neubert, WLALA Past President Helen B. Kim, Ellen Panksy,
and Brenda Dieck.
May 10th is
Family Day for the 2014 Food From the Bar campaign at the Los Angeles Regional
Food Bank headquarters. Thanks to WLALA
Past President and Food From the Bar Liaison Kathleen McDowell for
her leadership in bringing Food From the Bar to WLALA and to Los Angeles. Explore the many ways you can support the
campaign by visiting www.lafoodbank.org.
Several WLALA Board
members, including yours truly, will participate in the California Women
Lawyers annual conference on May 16th. There are panel sessions and MCLE presentations on a variety
of topics related to the theme: Strategies
for Success. If you can’t break away
from the office during the day, then stop by the cocktail reception honoring
Judge Victoria Kolakowski that will
close out the day’s events.
It’s hard to believe
WLALA’s board year is more than half over and it’s
already time to start looking ahead to next year. If you wish to become more involved, please
consider joining our board. WLALA is
accepting applications from new and returning board members for the 2014-2015
year. The deadline to apply is May 31st.
In closing, I want to acknowledge the recent
birthday of the legendary Selma Moidel
Smith. Selma is a past president
(twice) and a lifetime member of WLALA. A
few weeks ago, I was privileged to join a room filled with California legal
dignitaries and honored to introduce many WLALA past presidents at the musical
and legal celebration of Selma’s 95th birthday. Selma is a true renaissance woman who
continues to inspire through her generous spirit and commitment to our
profession. Happy Birthday, Selma!
