A Networking Night Out Hosted by the Young Lawyers Section of WLALA
By Victoria M. McLaughlin
Please join the Young Lawyers Section for a night of socializing and networking at Scarpetta Los Angeles located in the Montage Beverly Hills. This night will present a great opportunity to mingle with old friends and meet some new ones. Non-WLALA members and non-attorneys are encouraged to attend. Those who arrive early will enjoy hosted beer, wine, and cocktails.
As attorneys, we hear of the value—even the necessity—of networking from the beginning of our careers. For many of us, the education of networking began in law school. Along the way, my mentors have told me countless stories of the business opportunities gained and dream clients landed thanks to past connections made while networking. However, while we may understand that networking will allow us to better grow our respective practices, actually pursuing networking opportunities with vigor can be a challenge.
For example, undertaking the task of networking for the first time raises many questions for attorneys in the early stages of a career. Notably, we must decide how we are to brand ourselves, a difficult task for a young attorney whose current position may not be in the field he or she has an interest in pursuing long-term. We must also learn how to accessibly present ourselves to potential clients as opposed to our like-minded attorney peers with whom we tend to spend most of our days. I recently realized that I had neglected to introduce myself as an attorney to new acquaintances; since most of my daily conversations take place with other attorneys, I had become accustomed to introducing myself by my specialty.
Our Networking Night Out will provide a casual and fun environment for us to meet new friends, reconnect with previous connections, and share how we each navigate our networking ventures.
