WLALA’s awardees this year include Judith Bain. Ms. Bain founded the Epson America Legal Affairs Department in 1986. As General Counsel for almost three decades, Ms. Bain has overseen legal issues arising from the development, marketing, sales, and support of Epson products in a rapidly changing and multinational business environment.  Ms. Bain is a dedicated role model and mentor for other attorneys, and she is a longstanding Board Member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles.  WLALA will be awarding Judith Bain with the Ernestine Stahlhut Award, which is given annually to a woman of the legal profession who, among other things, has attained the respect, admiration and affection of the Bench and Bar by her outstanding character, her dedication to service and her significant contributions to the cause of justice.

WLALA will also be honoring University of California Office of the General Counsel with the Myra Bradwell Award, which is given annually to honor a law firm, corporate or government office, or other entity that has been exemplary in promoting and advancing women lawyers and issues important to women. The UC Office of the General Counsel is committed to the advancement of its women attorneys throughout California. Two-thirds of its 86 attorneys are women, and nearly half of the leadership team are women, including four Deputy General Counsel and four Campus Counsel.  The UC Office of the General Counsel strives for a diverse employee population, as well as diversity among outside counsel, and it supports flexible and part-time work schedules for all of its lawyers.

WLALA will be awarding the Distinguished Service Award to Hon. Beverly Reid O’Connell.  The Distinguished Service Award is given to a member of WLALA who has brought honor and esteem to the organization by their commitment to public service.  Judge Reid O’Connell is a United States District Court Judge for the Central District of California.  Prior to her appointment to the federal court in 2013, she served eight years as a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge and ten years as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California.  Judge Reid O’Connell has served on WLALA’s Board of Governors for over 15 years.  As part of her work with the Los Angeles Superior Court and WLALA, Judge Reid O’Connell established the Power Lunch Program, which is designed to bring under-served, ethnically diverse high school students together with lawyers, judges, and courtroom staff in a courtroom environment to learn about the justice system.  Judge Reid O’Connell also participated in Project L.E.A.D. through the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and acted as a coach for La Serna High’s Mock Trial Program.

Additionally, WLALA will install Jennifer S. Romano as President for 2014-2015, along with Kimberly ArnalStacy Horth-NeubertAmy Brantly, Heather Stern, and Jennifer Leland who will serve on the Executive Committee, and the dedicated 2014-2015 board members who have been appointed to serve on the Board of Governors of WLALA and/or the WLALA Foundation. 

President Jennifer S. Romano is a litigation partner in Crowell & Moring’s Los Angeles office. Jennifer focuses her practice on defending companies against unfair competition and consumer class actions, litigating on behalf of health care companies, and representing companies in high stakes litigation matters. Jennifer represents clients as both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts as well as in arbitration and mediation. Her clients include major health plans, retail and consumer products companies, financial services, and professional services firms. Ms. Romano earned her B.A. from University of California, Los Angeles (Phi Beta Kappa) and her J.D. from University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Order of the Coif), where she was Executive Editor of the Berkeley Women’s Law Journal. After graduating from law school, Ms. Romano clerked for the Honorable Mariana R. Pfaelzer in the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Ms. Romano has served on the WLALA Board of Governors since 2008 and the Executive Committee since 2010.
