FOOD FROM THE BAR Returns for the Third Year:
April 18-May 14, 2011

by Kathleen McDowell
Spring is in the air, and that means it’s Food from the Bar time!  Once again, WLALA is leading the Food from the Bar campaign to bigger and better achievements.
Food from the Bar is a grass-roots effort to alleviate hunger among children in our community.  It consists of a four-week “friendly competition” among law firms and legal offices in Los Angeles in which participants contribute money, donate food, and volunteer time sorting and packing food at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank.  This year’s campaign will run from April 18 to May 14, with a kick-off volunteer opportunity at the Foodbank on April 16.
The campaign helps replenish food bank supplies to meet families’ increased need for food during the summer, when children are out of school and not receiving subsidized lunches and breakfasts.  The goals for the 2011 campaign are to raise $350,000 (which amounts to 1.4 million meals), 15,000 pounds of food, and 750 volunteer shifts.  Last year’s campaign raised over $286,000, collected over 14,000 pounds of food, and 549 volunteer shifts.
There are many ways WLALA members can be part of this year’s campaign.  How can you help?
1)  Sign up your firm or law office.  CLICK HERE and fill out and return the registration form.  You will receive regular updates and details directly from the Foodbank.
2)  Work a volunteer shift.   WLALA has designated May 7, 12:30 to 3:30 pm, as “WLALA Volunteer Day” at the downtown Foodbank (a few miles south of downtown) and May 14, 4 to 7 pm, as “WLALA Volunteer Night” at the Westside Foodbank (in Santa Monica).  You can also volunteer on your own timeframe at your convenience.  To see available shifts and sign up, CLICK HERE
3)  Donate food through WLALA.  WLALA will have bins at the WLALA office to collect your food donations, and you can also collect food at committee or section meetings, or any other WLALA event during the campaign.
4)  Contribute online:  When the campaign opens on April 18, you will be able to make “virtual food donations” or monetary donations through the Foodbank’s website, or you can write a check made payable to “Los Angeles Regional Foodbank.”
5)  Spread the word:  Tell your colleagues in the legal community about Food from the Bar and ask them to participate and to tell their colleagues.
