Getting the Benefit of the Bargain:
How to Win in Your Everyday Negotiations
by Jan Frankel Schau
As lawyers, we negotiate countless items - extensions to discovery responses, settlements, terms of employment for ourselves and for our employees, and so on. Whether you are negotiating on behalf of a client or yourself, this interactive session will help you improve the odds of getting what you want.
Mediators Eleanor Barr and Denise Madigan will explore different approaches to negotiation, help you determine your dominant approach and learn to utilize other approaches as well. You will learn how to strategize a negotiation and how to tailor your approach to meet the needs of the specific context, issues and parties at hand. We will also give you tips on how to handle challenging negotiations and how to prevent the discussions from reaching an impasse.
The ADR Section of WLALA, Chaired by Mediator, Jan Frankel Schau, plans to present a series of Programs this year under the general heading of "Beyond the Courthouse: Settling Legal Disputes in the 2000's." This first program of the series will be of broad interest to lawyers in all facets of the practice: whether transactional, criminal, civil, public counsel, in-house counsel or family law.
This is an opportunity to learn from professional negotiators and professors of negotiation to improve your chance for success in every negotiation. Join us for a program that promises collegiality and a lively conversation aimed at getting you the benefit of every bargain you negotiate.
If you would like us to focus on a specific type of negotiation, feel free to send us an email message prior to the program. We will be happy to discuss the issue at the program, while keeping the identifying details and parties confidential. Feel free to reach our presenters at firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com.
