Beverly Hills Bar Association's Labor and Employment Section Features Three of L.A.'s Finest Women Jurists at Judge's Night

by Jan Frankel Schau
“There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."

(Keynote speech at Celebrating Inspiration luncheon with the WNBA's All-Decade Team, 2006)” -
Madeleine Albright
Judges Suzanne Bruguera, Amy Hogue and Michelle Rosenblatt have answered the call and will present a program on September 19, 2012 on “Unique Issues Arising in the Management of Employment Cases in Court.” When we put together a list of high profile accomplished judges in Los Angeles Superior Court, these three female jurists were “top of mind”.   Lucky for the BHBA and the community, they agreed to come together for what will undoubtedly be an inspiring program.
Moderated by WLALA Member Jan Frankel Schau of ADR Services, this informal discussion will probe into key elements of handling litigated employment cases from the judges’ point of view. Jan will inquire into the Judges’ perspectives on demurrers, discovery and motion practice—bringing valuable guidance and practical handling tips that are not easily found in Court rules and guidebooks. Though each judge will undoubtedly have her own point of view, because all of the judges are women, it will be interesting to see how they diverge or coalesce on these issues.
We will also discuss timing and settlement issues relating to pre-filing efforts to resolve disputes and best practices for client representation throughout the handling of the case: from filing through trial. There have been significant changes in the management of litigated cases in downtown Los Angeles in the past few years, and the Judges will briefly outline the Court’s concerted efforts at streamlining the litigation process through the addition of dedicated settlement judges, direct calendar and more focused case management.
Finally, the judges will regale the attendees with a few great anecdotes of trial highlights/and low points they have observed as well as trends they foresee in the coming years in the handling of these contentious and ubiquitous types of disputes.
You will not want to miss the chance to ask questions of the jurists and gain invaluable insight into handling your next employment case from their collective and individual wisdom.
The event will take place at the new Beverly Hills Bar Offices at: 9420 Wilshire Blvd. Refreshments and networking will begin at 6:30 PM with a 1 hour MCLE presentation beginning at 7:00 P.M. WLALA members will be given the BHBA Members price of $65.00 if you register in advance. There is limited seating.
