WLALA Joins With NAWBO-LA to Discuss Independent Contractors
By Heather Stern
WLALA’s April 4, 2013 joint event with the LA Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO-LA) was a definite success! This event, which was held in a private dining room at the California Club, brought the two memberships together to hear expert advice on a topic of mutual interest, namely independent contractors. Experts from the fields of law, accounting and insurance discussed the potential tax penalties of incorrectly classifying a worker as an independent contractor versus an employee, wage and hour related ramifications, insurance coverage concerns, and other liability issues. Attendees enjoyed a fabulous dinner, excellent and substantive discussion, and significant networking opportunities and mingling among a diverse group of attendees.
WLALA would like to thank the speakers for making this event such a success: Christine A. Page, Esq. of Gilchrist & Rutter, Karen Oxman, CPCU of GNW-Evergreen Insurance Services, LLC, and Cathy Goonetilleke of Ernst & Young LLP.
WLALA would also like to thank its sponsors for their generosity and support. Ernst & Young LLP was the Venue Sponsor and secured a beautiful location and generously arranged for dinner for everyone. We would also like to thank Arbia Group, one of the program sponsors, which is a company that provides top quality legal talent, on demand and on an as-needed basis, to law firms, corporate legal departments and start ups. We also want to thank Merrill Lynch, and especially Nancy McCready, a Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch, who also supported the program. Finally, we want to thank Silver Tongue visual communication design for supporting the program. Silver Tongue specializes in design, branding and graphics, including trial graphics.
WLALA would also like to thank NAWBO-LA for its hard work and effort in bringing this program to fruition. Also, in follow up to this program, NAWBO-LA is presently offering all WLALA members a discount on the associate membership rate to become a member of NAWBO-LA.
