President's Message - APRIL

Kimberly Arnal
WLALA President 2015-2016

WLALA is always looking to provide its members with meaningful substantive programs and networking opportunities.  Programming is an essential way that WLALA further its mission of promoting the full participation of women lawyers and judges in the legal profession.  It’s a way for our members to get together, learn from one another and provide our support to each other.  Over the next 30-days WLALA will hold 11 events aimed at improving our members’ substantive knowledge of the law, providing them with career advice and networking opportunities and even occasions to give back to the community by volunteering or mentoring.

On April 21st, WLALA will hold its 21st Annual Litigators Forum: “If I Could Pass Along One Important Lesson . . . ”  The Forum will feature keynote speaker Leah Weil, Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Sony Pictures Entertain and a panel of high-profile women trial attorney who will discuss lessons they learned about preparing for trial and conquering the courtroom.  On May 3rd WLALA and the LACBA Litigation Section will jointly hold “Big Litigation and the Impact of the New Federal Rules: How is it Working.”  A panel of attorneys and federal judges will discuss the impact of the new federal rules on large or complex litigation.

WLALA also has several events that will focus on career development.  On April 28th, the Young Lawyers Section will present “Navigating the Path Towards Your Dream Law Job”.  A panel of experienced attorneys in different practice areas will discuss a wide range of topics, including creating your narrative, recognizing your transferable skills, finding advocates, understanding office politics and establishing your reputation.  On May 10th WLALA will hold two Mentoring Circle Dinners; one in Pasadena and one on the Westside.

Finally, if you are looking for opportunities to volunteer and give back to your community, please join us on May 14th for the WLALA Food from the Bar Family Volunteer Day.  Bring your family and friends, and help other volunteers fill bags full of food that will be distributed to children in the Food Bank’s Backpack Program.  The event starts and 9:00 am at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, located at 1701 E. 41st Place, Los Angeles; and this year children 5 years old or older are welcome to participate.  It’s a great way to give back to your community and spend time with family and friends.  WLALA will also hold two Power Lunch Programs.  On at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse on April 20th and another at the Antelope Valley Courthouse on April 22nd.  I hope to see you at one or more of our upcoming events.
