WLALA President 2017-2018

Celebrating Sisterhood

Hopefully all of us have been assisted by other women.  As women lawyers we share so many things in common and are faced with so many of the same issues and challenges.  We are uniquely situated to learn from each other and, as often a minority group in the profession, we can help lift each other up.  I pride WLALA as a place where women lawyers can come for support in getting advice and assistance about career opportunities and developing business.  Indeed, we host mentoring circles monthly and offer time for networking before events as well as on the golf course.

Admittedly, when I think about women helping other women, I generally think of that somewhat controversial quote from Madeleine Albright: “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”[1]  While that quote doesn’t exactly inspire me, I definitely get her point (and it does give me chuckle).  Here are a few quotes that hopefully offer a bit more inspiration[2]:

·       “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels.  Life’s a bitch.  You’ve got to go out and kick ass.”  Maya Angelou, writer and activist.

·       “We ask justice, we ask equality, we ask that all the civil and political rights that belong to citizens of the United States, be guaranteed to us and our daughters forever.”  Susan B. Anthony, activist.

·       “The way to achieve your own success is to be willing to help somebody else get it first.”  Iyanla Vanzant, speaker.

·       “Galvanizing is really important.  If you’re all doing something together, you have a lot more momentum.  And you meet each other and you create this social economy of people helping each other.  So, it’s not as lonely. And it’s really fun.”  Anna Bulbrook, singer/songwriter & activist.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, lawyers from WLALA, Black Women Lawyers, Latina Lawyers and Asian Pacific American Women Lawyers Alliance will gather on March 15th to celebrate sisterhood and share all that we have in common (plus have lots of fun).  I hope that you will be able to join us as we grab the world by the lapels.
