Lucky Seven!  Breaking 100.  What's Up With These Numbers?

by Cynthia R. Cohen, Ph.D., Verdict Success LLC

Starting our seventh series, the WLALA Golf League is back into full swing – literally on Aug. 1. We will break 100 this season – not in the way most playing 18 holes imagine. This seventh series will initiate the 100th woman to play in our league! Who will that be? Will it be you? Sign ups began earlier this summer and the league will sell out soon after this newsletter hits the stands.

Golf is about numbers, courtesy, relationship building, communication, attitude, fresh air and birds. Liking numbers is as easy as one, two, three. One under par is a birdie; two under par is an eagle; and three under par is an albatross (a rare bird indeed). A hole-in-one takes some luck and I witnessed it in another league on the second hole at The Lakes. The Lakes is an executive nine-hole course. While our Golf League only plays 9 holes, we end at the 19th hole (the bar and restaurant). Sharing recaps of great shots or near misses into the lake are part of the fun. Whether you win or lose you get a prize. We do network about business there too.

Relationship building and all the other attributes are visible in our team play. Our more experienced players are team captains. We play a scramble format – everyone takes a turn at the tee. The captain and the rest of the team decide which ball to choose for the next hit. Everyone hits from the best strategic location until someone putts the ball into the hole. Beginners often have the best hit. It is amazing how quickly some women pick up the game. Seventy-five percent of our players started as true beginners and now play with our more advanced beginners and intermediates in our Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) WLALA club.

Back to the 99 women who already participated in the Golf League, many return, many stay in touch. We’ve had babies born, law students graduate, clerkships begin, jobs changed, business transacted, cases settled – life is full for those in the Golf League. There are special bonds created when engaging in activities of any kind through WLALA. Many in the Golf League attend the WLALA Installation or play in bar association tournaments such as LACBA’s or LAIPLA’s together. While it may be a club within an association, there is nothing cliquish about these women who invite others to join the camaraderie and fun.

And regarding numbers, I look forward to breaking 100 real soon.
