Food from the Bar Volunteering Is In Season:
April 28 through May 23, 2014

by Kathleen McDowell

The Food from the Bar campaign is underway, which means WLALA members have plenty of opportunities to join the Los Angeles legal community in supporting the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank.   Super Volunteer Saturday is May 10, with opportunities to volunteer at both the downtown Foodbank and the Westside Foodbank.   Volunteers may be asked to do a variety of tasks, including sorting through food donations, packing bags or backpacks of food for seniors or children, and sorting through or packing produce or other food products.   It is fun, light physical work – good for both the body and the soul.

Longtime WLALA member and Food from the Bar volunteer Valerie Fontaine is coordinating a group of WLALA volunteers for a volunteer session at the Westside Foodbank on May 10 from 4 pm to 7 pm.  The Westside Foodbank is located at 1710 22nd St. in Santa Monica.  If you would like to join this WLALA group, please contact Valerie at 310-842-6985 or

Saturday May 10 is also “Family Day” at the downtown Foodbank, at which children are permitted to join in the volunteer activities.  Ordinarily, volunteers must be 14 or older to volunteer, but on this day the Foodbank has set up special activities for younger children (for 5 and older) so that they can join their older brothers and sisters or parents in volunteering.   The Family Day volunteering shift will run from 9 am to noon; there will also be regular volunteering available on that day.

Also, On May 14, 2014, join other WLALA members and Chef Michelle Hohman at Urban Kitchen in South Pasadena for a Food & Wine Pairing event. Urban Kitchen is a recreational cooking school designed to bring people together to LEARN, CREATE, and SAVOR delicious, seasonal meals. Its chef instructors are classically trained with real world experience. Event attendees will be treated to a cooking demonstration along with a wine discussion by a certified wine specialist. Dinner and wine will be served. All net proceeds will go to benefit Food from the Bar. Space is limited.

We hope that 2014 is the year that more WLALA members will give Foodbank volunteering a try.   If your schedule doesn’t permit that this year, you can still support the campaign by making a donation – at any level – online with a credit card.  Please email to receive instructions.    Thank you very much for being a part of the Food from the Bar
