The statistics are scary-- the ABA reported in 2012 that the average amount borrowed in law school by J.D. graduates was $84,600 for lawyers who attended public law schools, and $122,158 for those who attended private law schools. Before you despair and decide to use your diploma as fuel for cooking Top Ramen, get some real-world financial planning advice at WLALA’s Young Lawyers event on financial literacy and money management.

As lawyers, we plan for our clients every day, but we often neglect to plan for our own financial health. Financial planning doesn’t have to be stressful: it can be an exercise in empowerment! The Young Lawyers’ Section of WLALA has put together a panel of financial planning experts to help you assess and improve your financial health. The panel consists of two financial planners, Lara Lamb, CFP of Abacus Wealth Partners and Tatiá MacKinnon, Associate Vice President of Ameriprise Financial, and a tax attorney, Antreas Hindoyan, Partner of Hindoyan & Associates. Our speakers will go over the basics of financial planning, ranging from budgeting and student loan repayment to estate planning, retirement accounts, life insurance, and prudent investment strategies.
This event is an opportunity for everyone, from financial neophytes to the budding Warren Buffets among us, to get a substantive but digestible overview of how to build and maintain financial security.
We’re also providing attendees with helpful take-home financial planning tools, including:
- Budget worksheets
- Separate account budgeting system
- Tips on budgeting for young lawyers
- Personal net worth calculator and personal finance metrics
- Fun and informative 5-minute podcasts on common financial and legal planning issues, with a particular focus on asset protection concepts
