Food From the Bar: Lawyers Fighting Hunger in LA
May 2 through May 27, 2016
Saturday, April 30th marked the kickoff of the eighth annual Food from the Bar campaign in Los Angeles to benefit the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. During four weeks in May, the legal community shows its support of the Food Bank by engaging in a friendly competition to collect funds and food donations, and volunteer at the Food Bank. Last year’s campaign raised over $500,000, collected over 10,000 pounds of food, and clocked over 750 volunteer shifts. This year the goal is $550,000 in monetary donations, 11,000 pounds of food donations, and 850 volunteer shifts.
WLALA was instrumental in starting the Food from the Bar campaign in Los Angeles, and has assumed a leadership role in growing the campaign since its inception. The campaign is held in May, when the wave of year-end giving has subsided just as children are released from school (and meal programs) for summer break. Children’s backpack and other programs stabilize the food situation for thousands of families with fresh, nutritious and shelf-stable food. Seniors and others at risk of hunger also benefit from the Food Bank’s many programs. To make a donation, go to WLALA’s virtual food drive page here and pay with a credit card, or write a check made payable to “Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.”
As another part of the campaign, WLALA members, friends, committees, and sections are encouraged to volunteer for a shift at the Food Bank, sorting food or stuffing food kits for seniors or backpacks for children. Ordinarily volunteers must be 14 years old or older but on Saturday, May 14, there will be a volunteer shift from 9 to noon for families, including children between the ages of five and fourteen. The children love it, and learn some valuable lessons about gratitude, charity, and helping others, as well as empathy and understanding for those in our community who face food insecurity and hunger on a regular basis.
This special “WLALA Bar Association/Super Saturday Family Day” volunteer session will be held on May 14th from 9 am until noon. Space will be limited, so if you want to participate with your kids on either one of these days, please register soon by clicking on this link. The password is nohungerWLALA (case sensitive). There are plenty of other weekday and Saturday (morning and afternoon shifts) volunteer opportunities at the Foodbank, so please contact the Food Bank or Kay Burt at the WLALA office if you want to set up a volunteer session at a different time. There is also one volunteer day at the Westside Food Bank in Santa Monica on May 14 from 4 to 9 pm.
You can also sign up your office or firm to be a participant in Food from the Bar by clicking here. There are plenty of online resources, including a coordinator’s packet with “everything-you-want-to-know-about-FFTB,” on the Foodbank’s website to help make your campaign a success. Food from the Bar is also on other social media: facebook.com/foodfromthebarlosangeles; twitter.com/FFTBLA; Instagram.com/FFTBLA.
