President's Message - APRIL

Jennifer Romano
WLALA President 2014-2015

Spring often is the busiest time of year for WLALA.  Our members are trying to fit in their networking and business development plans before summer activities and vacations arrive.  This year is no different.

We have many programs and events scheduled this month.  Our In-House Committee will present Self-Advocacy for In-House Lawyers on May 13; our Young Lawyers Committee will present  Show Me the Money on May 14 (a program addressing money management); and our Business Development Committee will present True Grit on May 21.  We have volunteer opportunities at a Power Lunch program in Compton on May 8 and many opportunities to get involved in Food From the Bar.  And, we have a WLALA night out at the theater on May 22 and our monthly happy hour, mentoring circles and rainmaker roundtable.  We know you do not have the time to attend all of these events.  But, we invite you to take the time for a few of these events to connect with other WLALA members, learn some professional development skills and/or just take a breather from your stressful careers.

We also encourage you to deepen your involvement with WLALA.  If you previously participated in committees or in leadership with WLALA and you want to commit even more to the organization and its mission, we encourage you to apply to serve on the WLALA Board.  Applications for the 2015-2016 Board year (which begins in September) are due the end of this month.  If you have not yet had the chance to be actively involved with the organization, we encourage you to find a committee or section that interests you, reach out to the leaders of that group and get more engaged.

A few WLALA members deserve recognition this month for meeting that challenge and making exceptional contributions.  First, I want to thank Past President Kathleen McDowell for her relentless commitment to Food from the Bar.  Food from the Bar is a grass-roots campaign to fight hunger among children in our communities.  Kathleen was a driving force in bringing Food From the Bar to Los Angeles.  Please take a few hours this month to volunteer at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank in May and donate to Food From the Bar to help children stay well-fed over the summer months.

In addition, I want to thank our ambitious co-chairs of the WLALA Litigation Section, Michelle Abidoye, Robyn Crowther and Jennifer Landau, who were responsible for the outstanding Litigator’s Forum in April.  They secured an impressive group of speakers on the subjects of privacy and cybersecurity (including Joanne McNabb –Director of Privacy Education and Policy for the California Attorney General, and Ashlie Beringer – Deputy General Counsel at Facebook), and brought a thought-provoking discussion to a large audience.  Thank you for your valuable contribution to WLALA and the Los Angeles legal community!
