Preserving Our Venue: Saving The Lakes!
by Cynthia Cohen, Ph.D.
Celebrating Five. WLALA Golf League is approaching its fifth anniversary in December. We will be celebrating with the start of the new series. More than 150 women have participated in our golf activities through the WLALA Golf League or the WLALA SCGA Club. In our Golf Clinic at The Lakes 75% of the women were brand new golfers. Our Golf Clinic (with three golf instructors) is a fun way to learn golf or polish your existing skills in a non-threatening environment with like-minded women. Our nine-hole round at The Lakes includes an experienced player as a team captain with all players in a scramble format on an executive golf course. Afterwards we congregate for drinks and appetizers at the 19th hole. Our lively camaraderie does not stop there, as members often become friends, refer business to one another and/or gain employment. Thirty percent of our golfers are in-house counsel.
Preserving our Venue. Topgolf was in discussions with the El Segundo City Council to take over The Lakes. The deal with the El Segundo City Council is history as the council majority voted October 3 to NOT proceed with the deal. Developments over the past five years took a turn last month when little noticed clauses hidden in the ground lease surfaced. The essence of one clause stated that if Topgolf failed over the course of this 50-year lease, the area could be used as a gentleman’s club at a reduced rent. This shocked us! I had an opportunity to present to council along with the Save the Lakes group. We addressed several issues concerning injuries at other Topgolf facilities, junior golf, parking, and an EIR suggesting no modifications to ingress and egress. CBS news covered part of the meeting. Happy to discuss local details with anyone interested. Fortunately, the gist is that our WLALA Golf League resumes in December at our preferred venue.
Going to Golf School at Emerald Isle! While the future of The Lakes was in limbo, we planned a fabulous two-day Golf School at a course owned by two women golf pros and their husbands. Holly Kennedy, one of the golf course owners, is an instructor supportive of women’s golf and all that we have done. She is awesome! This is an event for beginners, advanced beginners and intermediates. We will have lessons, lunch, a 9-hole scramble, and 19th hole camaraderie on Saturday, November 4. Sunday, November 5 has a bonus of yoga for golfers, then: Option A) Take a lesson and play 9 holes; or Option B) Play an 18-hole course. Click on the link for more details. http://www.wlala.org/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1014442&group= Hotel options will be sent to all registered by October 15. Don’t delay as this event could sell out.
WLALA SCGA Golf Rounds and Tournaments. Officially named the SCGA Advocating Women Lawyers Golf Club (aka WLALA SCGA) is celebrating 4 years as a club. Members are women in the legal field – lawyers, judges, law students, expert witnesses, jury consultants, court reporters, law firm administrators, etc. Many began golfing through the WLALA Golf League. One goal is to help develop business relationships through getting more women on the golf course at law professional association tournaments. This month we have a team of two foursomes playing MountainGate Country Club on Monday, October 9 at the Beverly Hills Bar Foundation Golf Tournament. Hit ‘em long!
