President's Message - March

Ruth D. Kahn
WLALA President 2012-2013

Forty years ago, on January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme issued its landmark opinion Roe v. Wade, making choice a fundamental right under the United States Constitution. In celebration of the high court’s vote of 7 to 2 in favor of Roe, members and friends of WLALA enjoyed a fascinating discussion on February 25, 2013 with Serena Josel, Director of Public Affairs at Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, Rose Keston Pondel, an attorney and founder of the Family Formation Law Center in Santa Monica, and Nurit Winkler, M.D., a physician who specializes in Reproductive Endocrinology, Gynecology and Obstetrics. I extend thanks to Heather Stern and Kirin Singh, WLALA Board Members and Co-Chairs of WLALA’s Pro-Choice & Reproductive Rights Committee, for presenting such an insightful and stimulating program.

In March, WLALA will continue to highlight successes by and on behalf of women. In this issue, you will find an inspiring and candid interview with the Honorable Carolyn Kuhl, Assistant Presiding Judge of the Los Angeles Superior Court, where she not only previews the coming changes in the courts, but also stresses the benefits of marrying a feminist and identifies mottos that speak to her “Keep calm and carry on,” and “We can do it!” Thank you to WLALA Board Member Julie R.F. Gerchik for the interview and highly relevant article.

Also in this issue you will find a provocative Generational Perspective by WLALA member Jane Wald, who has practiced law for more than 36 years, and a delightful piece by Professor Yxta Maya Murray on Boudicca, queen of the British Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. At the end of March, WLALA will have a reception where we recognize and honor many “first” women in the field of law. Women’s History Month, which traces its beginnings back to the first International Women's Day in 1911, would not be complete without it. In 1987, Congress expanded the focus on women to the whole month of March. Numerous other countries will join in celebrating the strides that women have made. Information about the reception will be posted on WLALA’s website very soon.

Looking ahead, WLALA is accepting nominations for Officers for the coming 2013-2014 year. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2013. For an application and more information about this process, please CLICK HERE.
