Tremblay, as well as our new Board of Governors for 2013-2014! WLALA’s 2013 Awards and Installation Dinner will begin with a reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner, and is themed, “Building Community through Collaboration.”
WLALA’s awardees this year include Jackie Lacey, Los Angeles County District Attorney. District Attorney Lacey is the first woman and first African-American to serve as Los Angeles County District Attorney since the office was created in 1850. In that role, she oversees roughly 1,000 lawyers, nearly 300 investigators and about 800 support staff employees. WLALA will be awarding District Attorney Lacey the Ernestine Stahlhut Award, which is given annually to a woman of the legal profession who, among other things, has attained the respect, admiration and affection of the Bench and Bar by her outstanding character, her dedication to service and her significant contributions to the cause of justice.
WLALA will also be honoring Occidental Petroleum Corporation with the Myra Bradwell Award, which is given annually to honor a law firm, corporate or government office, or other entity that has been exemplary in promoting and advancing women lawyers and issues important to women. Occidental is an international oil and gas exploration and production company and the second largest public company by market capitalization headquartered in the Los Angeles area. Occidental sponsors programs that promote and encourage young women to pursue careers in science and engineering, as well as programs that support the advancement of women internationally, in countries such as Oman. Occidental’s legal department is a reflection of its commitment to women company-wide. Occidental’s professional legal staff company-wide is over 45% women and a majority of the parent company’s legal department are women, including the only two Associate General Counsel.
WLALA will be awarding the Distinguished Service Award to Hon. Nicole Bershon, Judge, Los Angeles Superior Court. Prior to her appointment as a Judge, Hon. Bershon spent ten years with the Office of the Inspector General for the Los Angeles Police Commission, first as an Assistant Inspector General and later as Inspector General. She is a Past-President of WLALA and has been a member of the Board of Governors of WLALA since 2000. She serves as a liaison between WLALA and the Power Lunch Program, designed to bring disadvantaged high school students together with lawyers, judges, and courtroom staff in a courtroom environment to learn about the justice system. Hon. Bershon also serves on the Los Angeles Superior Court’s Diversity and Community Outreach Committees and is a member of the Board of Directors of the California Court Commissioners Association.
Additionally, WLALA will install Anne C. Tremblay as President for 2013-2014, along with Jennifer Romano, Kimberly Arnal, Stacy Horth-Neubert, Amy Brantly, and Heather Stern who will serve on the Executive Committee, and the dedicated 2013-2014 board members who have been appointed to serve on the Board of Governors of WLALA and/or the WLALA Foundation.
President Anne C. Tremblay is an assistant city attorney for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office where she supervises the Anti-Gang Section. In 2007, she was awarded the Los Angeles Police Commission’s Distinguished Service Medal for her work abating a notorious gang nuisance location in South Los Angeles. She is the author of Beyond Community Policing and provides training on public safety related issues for community based organizations and community developers. Ms. Tremblay holds a JD from EmoryUniversity, School of Law, and a B.A. in History from the University of California, Berkeley. She has served on the WLALA Board of Governors since 2007.
