Katrina Landeta

UCLA 2L - According to the US State Department, the Philippines is the top country of origin for recipients of a T-visa, a type of visa for victims of human trafficking.  Together with Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles, Katrina's fellowship project is to create know-your-rights materials for Filipino migrant workers in Los Angeles. Materials will cover worker and immigrant rights, such as wage-and-hour violations and threats of deportation, as well as legal service providers in Los Angeles that provide free or low-cost assistance. Different versions of the materials will be designed based on the worker’s visa type, since different problems may arise depending on the type of visa.  Katrina has also requested a small budget for travel and printing costs.  The committee recommends funding the project to create materials but not that video aspect; Katrina conveyed that the materials portion stands on its own without the videos.  The committee was impressed by Katrina's interview, her well reasoned project focused on a specific need, and the potential for the materials to be distributed in more than one language.
