President's Message - JUNE
Amy T. Brantly
WLALA President 2017-2018
“Do not leave the arena to the fools.” Poet Nikky Finney shared this quote, which was a bit of advice that she received from a professor of hers, with the audience at the Black Women Lawyers’ Annual Scholarship Fundraiser and Awards Luncheon which took place on Saturday in Marina Del Rey. That quote really resonated with me. We are living in a moment in history when able, ethical, competent people are speaking out and ridding the arena of several fools. We’ve especially seen this in the #metoo movement. And, I think these are good words to live by. I was honored to be invited to the BWL event by a young lawyer that I met through WLALA who assisted in putting the event together. The theme, “Catalysts for Change” was appropriate and fitting as BWL honored changemakers Nina Shaw who was awarded the Excellence in Advocacy Award, Susan Burton who was awarded the Community Service Award, and Nikky Finney who was awarded the Excellence in the Arts Award. I was so inspired by these women who reminded me again how important it is that we continue to fight for equality, justice and an end to both gender and racial discrimination.
Alongside BWL, LLBA, CWL, and APAWLA, we welcomed Associate Justice Carol Corrigan for a conversation about her experience and advice for dealing with discrimination in the legal profession. This event sold out and was attended by a large number of young lawyers just entering the profession. Justice Corrigan was extremely funny and imparted some words of wisdom that I found valuable. Board member, Judge Holly Fujie, was instrumental in putting this program together and I was so grateful that Justice Corrigan made herself available to our members in this very personal way.
As we head into June, we look forward to our annual silent auction, WLALApalooza, which raises money for both WLALA and WLALA Foundation so that we can continue to fight the good fight. This event is always fun, offers great networking, and the opportunity to buy fabulous goods and services, including tickets to sporting events and amusement parks, cocktail making classes, purses, jewelry and scores of other fun things. Thank you to all who have donated and sponsored and I hope that you can join us on June 20th!
Finally, I want to congratulate all of the new attorneys being admitted to the State Bar this month. We look forward to meeting the next generation of lawyers and we welcome you to WLALA.
